Overcoming Exam Stress

Stress can feel overwhelming especially as the exam date approaches. We are here to help you with some simple tips to manage stress and perform at your best.

Preparation is Key:

  • Plan your studying: Create a plan that breaks down the exam material into smaller sections. Make sure you include a few study breaks, too. This prevents you from doing any last-minute revision, a major stressor.
  • Focus on understanding, not memorisation: Learn to understand important concepts, not just memorise facts and figures. This will help you apply knowledge effectively.
  • Practice with past papers: Get familiar with the exam format and question styles. This builds confidence and reduces anxiety.

Mind Over Matter:

  • Relaxation techniques: Practice deep breathing exercises to calm your nerves before and during the exam.
  • Positive self-talk: Say goodbye to negative thoughts with simple affirmations like “I am prepared” or “I can do this.”
  • Seek support: Talk to friends, family, your tutor or one of our Learning Support Assistants about your worries. Sharing your feelings can be a big relief.

Maintain a Healthy Lifestyle:

  • Get enough sleep: Aim for 7-8 hours a night – especially before the exam. Sleep deprivation hinders concentration and memory.
  • Exercise regularly: Physical activity can reduce stress and improves focus. Take brisk walks, do some stretches or find an activity you enjoy.
