Meet our learners - Zoe
Gaining a Maths qualification unlocked Zoe’s path to career progression.
As a care worker in a North Devon charity, Zoe supports individuals with learning and physical disabilities. To move forward in her practice and develop her skills, Zoe wanted to take an NVQ Level 3 Adult Lead in Care course but didn’t have the necessary Maths qualifications to enrol.
After finding Learn Devon online, Zoe contacted the team and secured a place on a Functional Skills in Maths course. Although Zoe lived close to Learn Devon’s centre in Bideford, she chose to study online. As a single working parent, this option helped her balance home and work responsibilities.
Studying online was ideal because all her classes took place on Wednesday mornings and didn’t affect her evenings or work schedule. ‘Factoring it all in, studying online during the morning was the only way to get it all done. The course fitted around my lifestyle.’
Zoe found studying online helpful, productive and free from distractions. Even in a large online group, learners often collaborated in breakout rooms led by the tutor.
For Zoe, having a good tutor made all the difference especially after recognising that she struggled with dyscalculia. Her tutor, Owen, made maths accessible for the first time. ‘Owen just made the maths work and broke it down, he was fantastic. He was an amazing tutor and I would recommend him to anyone.’
After sitting the exam, Zoe was delighted to receive a passing grade in Maths in August 2025. The following month, she was enrolled on the NVQ Level 3 course just as she had hoped.
Zoe’s success shows how flexible learning can open doors for career progression.
