Meet our learners – Young Asylum Seekers
Learn Devon created safety and belonging for young asylum seekers through its English language provision.
Learn Devon’s young asylum seekers (YAS) programme offered more than English lessons – it provided a safe, welcoming space where asylum-seeking children could access English tuition while beginning to build new lives.
Designed to prepare learners for entry to Exeter College, the programme supported young people from countries including Afghanistan, Syria, Iran, Vietnam, Sudan, and Eritrea.
Each learner arrived with a unique story, often shaped by disrupted education and cultural dislocation. The programme began with a detailed assessment to understand each learner’s needs, language level, and background. This allowed staff to create personalised learning plans that supported the individual learners.
Based at a community centre in Exeter, the classes were intentionally learner-led. Learners were given control over their pace of learning and could take breaks when needed. This flexible, respectful environment helped build trust and confidence. As one learner, Zubair, shared:
‘Our class is very friendly and our teacher is very respectful and helps us always. I am happy here—thanks a lot everyone.’
Integration was central to the programme. Alongside English, learners developed digital and numeracy skills, explored British values, and took part in cultural enrichment activities. Trips to local landmarks, wildlife parks, and bushcraft sessions helped learners connect with their new environment and understand life in the UK.

The programme also fostered strong peer relationships. Learners supported one another, creating a sense of community and shared purpose. Mohammed reflected:
‘I am happy to learn English in Learn Devon. Our teacher is very good and all are friendly in class. Thanks to everyone.’
By the end of the programme, all nine learners had achieved Entry Level 2 in English, with two progressing to Level 1. More importantly, they had grown into a confident, cohesive group – welcoming new arrivals, showing kindness to staff, and demonstrating a deeper sense of belonging.
The Learn Devon YAS programme was not just an English language course – it offered young people a safe place to learn, grow, and begin to feel at home in a new country.
