Meet our learners - Steven
For Steven, adult education was not just about gaining qualifications, it was about creating a pathway back into employment after a career change.
Steven spent several years working in the scuba diving industry in the Dominican Republic before returning to West Yorkshire, where he worked in catering for almost 20 years. However, when he was diagnosed with arthritis in his hands, he realised that his career as a chef would become increasingly difficult.
With an aim to retrain and return to work, Steven moved to Devon and began exploring new opportunities. He had identified an Access to Higher Education course at North Devon College that would help him move towards career goals. However, to meet the entry requirements, he needed a Level 2 Maths qualification before he could enrol.
Learning online
While searching online, Steven discovered Learn Devon. He enrolled on a fast-track GCSE Maths course and, at the same time, completed a Functional Skills in English qualification.
‘The great thing about Learn Devon’s courses is that they start and finish throughout the year, which means you don’t have to wait until September,’ he said.
Studying online proved to be ideal because of his arthritis. Being able to learn from home provided both flexibility and comfort for Steven.
Steven praised the support he received throughout his studies, particularly from his tutor, Pippa, and support assistant, Colin.
‘Pippa was outstanding online. She had resources sorted ahead of each class so I could prepare in advance. Colin was very helpful in the online break-out room to address particular topics or challenging content.’
As an adult learner, Steven found the experience both rewarding and manageable.
‘I found it more enjoyable as a mature student. Homework was manageable, although it was necessary to do independent study and practice.’
Next steps for Steven
Thanks to his hard work and determination, Steven successfully gained the qualifications he needed and, by September 2026, had started his higher education course at North Devon College as planned.
Looking ahead, Steven is considering a future as a self-employed NVQ assessor and may even pursue a university degree in Spanish, with a view to working in the education sector.
His advice to anyone considering adult education?
‘I think you might discover it is a really enjoyable use of your time. Go for it.’
