Fresh start for 2026/27: New adult education opportunities across Devon
For many adults, the idea of going back into education can feel daunting. But across Devon, hundreds of people are discovering that it’s never too late to change direction, build confidence and unlock new career opportunities.
Each year, Learn Devon, Devon County Council’s adult education provider, supports adults from all walks of life to gain new skills, achieve qualifications and take meaningful steps forward. Now, with the launch of Learn Devon’s new programme featuring around 200 courses, even more opportunities are available to help people reshape their futures.
Building confidence and changing lives
Whether it’s improving everyday English, gaining a maths qualification, or developing digital skills, adult learning can have a powerful impact. It’s not just about education, it’s about confidence, independence and new possibilities.
For some, it’s the first step back into employment. For others, it’s a chance to progress in their current role or retrain for a completely new career.
Courses in English and Maths (such as Functional Skills and GCSEs qualifications) can help adults meet essential requirements for many jobs, apprenticeships and further training. Fast-track options are also available for those who want to achieve qualifications more quickly and move forward without delay. Learn Devon offers a number of ESOL courses (reading, writing, speaking and listening) for those who speak English as an additional language.
Opening doors to new careers
In today’s changing job market, having the right skills is more important than ever. Learn Devon’s wide range of courses is designed to help adults meet these demands and prepare for real career pathways.
Learners can explore opportunities in areas such as:
- Education and childcare, through courses like Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools or Early Years Practitioner
- Health and social care, with qualifications that support entry into this growing jobs sector
- Digital and IT, including an introduction to programming and essential digital skills for beginners
- Business and team leadership, with courses in horticulture, team leadership and self-employment
