Technical diploma for the early years practitioner (Level 2)

Overview

This course is for anyone who wants to start a career in the early years sector, working with children from birth to 5, and gaining knowledge of working with children up to age 7. It's suitable for school leavers, adults changing careers, or volunteers. This qualification is a full and relevant license to practice at Level 2, allowing you to count towards the staff-to-child ratio in an early years setting.

You'll learn the essential skills and knowledge needed for a successful career in early years. This includes safeguarding and promoting child welfare, understanding child development, promoting positive behaviour, supporting children with special educational needs, and how to plan and deliver activities and purposeful play.

Learning is a blend of online classroom study, independent work, and practical work placement. You must complete a mandatory minimum of 250 hours in an approved early years setting to gain practical experience and demonstrate competence.

Entry requirements

You should be aged 19+ (some 16+ can be considered) and eligible to study in the UK. You will need to meet with a Learning Adviser and complete a short English skills check to make sure you are joining the right course for you. You will need to provide a valid I.D and may be asked for proof of earnings/employment status for funding purposes.

Assessment criteria

You'll be assessed through a portfolio of evidence, which includes a range of methods. These may include written assignments, professional discussions, reflective accounts, and direct observation of your practice in the workplace by your assessor.

What do I need?

You must have a job/placement in a early year's setting (e.g., nursery, preschool) for a minimum of 250 hours. The placement needs to be with children from birth to 5 and provide a suitably qualified Level 3 mentor for supervision.

You will need a laptop or tablet and a good internet connection to join your online class and to complete and upload your work. A smartphone will not be suitable

What can I do next?

After completing this course, you can work in a supervised role as a nursery assistant or classroom assistant. It also provides a strong foundation for further study, such as the NCFE CACHE Level 3 Diploma for the Early Years Educator or a T Level in Education and Childcare.
