It's perfect for aspiring entrepreneurs and small business owners at the very beginning of their journey.

You'll learn the essential steps to setting up and running a small business. Key topics include understanding the legal structures (sole trader, partnership), developing a basic business plan, identifying your target market, managing finances (basic bookkeeping and tax obligations), and effective self-marketing strategies. You'll gain the confidence to take your idea from concept to reality.

Learning is delivered fully online via live classes, interactive group discussions, and self-paced activities. You'll use Google Classroom for case studies, resources, and submissions. Your tutor will provide guidance and feedback on tasks related to your business idea. Expect some independent study time.

Entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements. You should have a good standard of literacy and numeracy at Entry Level 3. Crucially, you need a strong interest in self-employment, basic computer literacy for an online course, and a willingness to actively participate in virtual sessions with your camera on.

Assessment criteria

Assessment for this unit is typically portfolio-based, involving a series of tasks or assignments completed throughout the course. Your work will be internally assessed and externally verified. There are no formal exams.

What do I need?

You must commit to attending your virtual sessions and completing independent study tasks on time. You will need a reliable laptop/tablet with webcam and microphone. A positive, proactive attitude and willingness to join in with online group work is essential. Access to a reliable computer or laptop with internet access is essential for research and completing assignments. You will need basic stationery (pen, paper/notebook) and a calculator.
