Overview
This course is for adults. It is the perfect starter if you want to come back to education to improve your English or if you are moving between courses. It helps you to get ready for Entry Level Functional Skills English studies.
You will engage with basic (E1/E2/E3) English skills for reading, writing and speaking. These activities will give you more confidence. You will feel ready for your next steps and for gaining a qualification.
Our classes are small, calm and welcoming. Your tutor will support you and explain things clearly. You will get lots of help and guidance. You will work with others and also have time to work on your own.
Entry requirements
The course is free. To join, you will speak to one of our friendly Learning Advisers. They will help you decide if the Pathway course is right for you. To make an appointment, please contact your local Learn Devon centre.
Assessment criteria
Your tutor will check your progress in a simple and supportive way during class. They will give you clear feedback to help you improve. This will be written in your learning plan. You may also try some practice questions. These help your tutor understand what you need to learn next.
What do I need?
You need to attend sessions regularly and take part in class activities.
Classes are held at Passmore Edwards Centre, a welcoming and accessible community venue. Please arrive on time and let Learn Devon staff know if you need any additional support to help you learn.
You will need a pen and a notebook or A4 folder to keep you work organised. Access to a paper English dictionary would also be useful. Access to the internet at home can be helpful for extra practice and learning resources.
What can I do next?
After this course, you can move on to the right English qualification for you. These are nationally recognised, which means they are valued by employers and colleges. Your options may include Functional Skills English or English for Speakers of Other Languages (Reading, Writing and Speaking and Listening).
Funding information
We provide Tailored learning opportunities on behalf of the Devon and Torbay Combined County Authority (DTCCA) who fund this learning and have to collect personal data for government monitoring of funding. You must live in Devon and have been normally resident in the UK for the past 3 years and have a legal right to receive this funding. We normally provided these courses free of charge, but if a fee is charged to you as a learner or your employer then we only receive half the funding from the DTCCA.
