Overview

Would you like to feel confident when speaking with other people and managing everyday life? Would you like to learn to use English at home, in your community and in the workplace? Then this course is for you.

You will practice introducing yourself, talking about your family, interests and daily routine, and asking and answering simple questions. You will learn useful English for shopping, travelling, ordering food, making appointments, speaking to doctors and reception staff, and asking for help when you need it. You will also learn new vocabulary, improve your pronunciation and listening skills, and understand common signs, notices and information.

Learn in a friendly and supportive classroom where everyone is encouraged to take part. You will practise speaking through games, role play, conversations, pair work and group activities. You will also learn about life in the UK, local services and your community. Your tutor will provide support and help you progress at your own pace.

Entry requirements

You need a little English, but you do not need to be confident. This course will help you improve.

Assessment criteria

There is no exam. Your tutor will support you and help you see how much progress you are making.

What do I need?

You will need pen, pencil, and paper. A dictionary can help.

If you have the internet and a computer or phone at home, it will help you practice between lessons. This is optional.

After this course, you can continue improving your English on another Learn Devon ESOL course. You may progress to an ESOL qualification course, improve your confidence for work or volunteering, or use your English skills to become more active in your local community
