Introduction to programming (Level 1)

Overview

Have you ever wondered how computers work, what makes them tick or want to know how programmers create apps and websites? Or perhaps you are thinking of a change of career, want to help the children with their homework or just want to do something different with your computer? Are you a teacher using Scratch in the classroom? If so, this course is the course for you!

You will explore how computers process information and make the different programming languages used today. You will be introduced to a graphical programming environment “Scratch” and investigate how computer programmes are designed and built. You will use your programming skills to design and develop your own programmes and games and test your creations. You will create a portfolio of your work that will demonstrate your learning and be presented as evidence to achieve a Level 1 Award in Progra

This course will be delivered face to face in the classroom. It requires you to commit to the full course, which is for 3 hours a week over 18 weeks.

Entry requirements

This is a level one course and is not suitable for beginners. You should be comfortable using a desktop computer or laptop for general tasks such as email and word processing. You must have experience of using a web browser to access multiple websites as the course software is all accessed through a website. Previous experience with Google products such as Docs and Draw will be helpful, but you will be shown how to use these during the course if you have not used them before

What do I need?

In the classroom, Learn Devon will provide laptops for you to use on this course. You will need to have access to either a laptop or desktop computer to complete assignments at home. You cannot complete the course using a smartphone or tablet. It can be a Windows, Mac or Chromebook but must have a working webcam (especially for online courses). Ideally you will be using the Chrome web browser to access the course materials and websites

You will be guided through the syllabus by an experienced tutor who will demonstrate the key concepts before supporting you when you try them yourself. This is a practical course but there is some reading and writing activities to undertake, support will always be available if you need it. The course uses various methods to assist your learning, including videos, websites, written materials, and presentations.

You will find a notebook and pencil or pen useful to take notes and complete activities. Headphones or earbuds may also be useful for online activities. A good, reliable internet connection is important
