Improve your writing for GCSE

Overview

This course is for adults who are considering a GCSE English Language qualification and would like to improve their writing skills and confidence.

The course covers creative, persuasive and informative writing, helping you adapt your style for different purposes and audiences. You will learn how to create engaging descriptions and narratives, write effective letters, articles and speeches, improve your vocabulary, spelling, punctuation and grammar and use techniques that will help you produce higher-quality GCSE responses.

This class takes place in person at Sidmouth Kennaway House. You will learn through tutor-led sessions, group discussions, practical writing activities and individual exercises. You will complete guided tasks and receive feedback on your work.

Entry requirements

You will need to have reading and writing skills at approximately Level 1 or above. Our friendly Learning Advisers will help you establish if the course is suitable for your needs and goals. To be eligible for our funding you will need to be 19 or over.

Assessment criteria

Your tutor will review your written work, provide feedback and monitor your progress against individual learning goals. Informal assessments and GCSE-style writing tasks may be used to identify strengths and areas for development.

What do I need?

You should attend regularly and be prepared to take an active part in learning activities. A positive attitude, willingness to practise writing and commitment to completing any work set between sessions will help make the most of the course.

Please bring a pen and a notebook with you to your classes.

What can I do next?

After completing this course, you may progress to a GCSE English Language course or continue developing your English skills through other Learn Devon programmes. Improved writing skills can also support further study, employment and everyday communication.
