Functional skills English : fast-track (Level 1/ Level 2)

Overview

The fast-track programme is for anyone who has the time to commit to completing the course in only 12 weeks. It is ideal for adults who need this qualification for quick progress to employment or training and only need to sharpen their English skills to prepare for exams.

This fast-paced course sharpens reading, writing and verbal communication skills, and places an early emphasis on exam practice. You will learn how texts are structured and how to extract and use information to respond effectively to assessment-style questions. You will also focus on producing clear, well-organised writing such as emails, letters and reports, using accurate spelling, punctuation and grammar while building confidence in speaking, listening, presenting ideas and taking part in for

You will be taught through Google Classroom online. Our classes are small and welcoming. In the sessions, you will work with a group and on your own. You will be taught by friendly, experienced English tutors using lots of different learning resources to support your learning and provide lots of practical guidance and support. Your tutor will also suggest homework which will help you with your work in class. As this is a fast-track course, you must be able to commit to 2 x 2.5 hour sessions

Entry requirements

The course is free*. To enrol, you will first need to talk to one of our friendly Learning Advisers. They will arrange a meeting and give you some simple tasks to carry out to make sure that this is the right course for you and your skill level. Assessment criteria

Your tutor will provide spoken and written feedback and work with you on an Individual Learning Plan to track your progress. There will be three exams. The speaking, listening and communicating exam takes place during your class. The reading and writing exams are held monthly at our centres outside class time. As this course is only 3 months long, the exams may fall on the same day and take place as early as week 8 of your study.

What do I need?

As this course is online, you will need a laptop with a webcam and a good internet connection. A smartphone is not suitable. Regular attendance is also required.

You will need a pen, a notebook and/or A4 folder. Access to a paper English dictionary would also be useful.

What can I do next?

You can make progress by taking Pearson Functional Skills English qualifications up to Level 2 (a Learning Adviser can explain this to you when you speak to them). When you are successful at Level 2, you can take an English GCSE qualification. Learn Devon are also able to offer courses in Digital Skills, Maths and Skills & Development.

Funding information

This course is being funded by the Devon and Torbay Combined County Authority (DTCCA). To be able to provide you with this opportunity we need to ensure that you are eligible for funding and have to collect personal data for government monitoring of funding. You must live in Devon and have been normally resident in the UK for the past 3 years and have a legal right to receive this funding. In addition to this you must NOT have previously achieved a grade 4 (C) or above in this subject and take part in an initial assessment to discover your current level. If you are not eligible for any reason, we will have to charge you fees to be able to provide this learning opportunity.
