Functional skills: English entry level 2 or 3

Overview

This course is for adults who want to improve their everyday English reading, writing and speaking skills. It is suitable for learners working towards Entry Level 2 or 3 who want to gain confidence for daily life, work or further learning.f English is not your first language, our ESOL courses may be more suitable.

You will practise English for everyday life. You will learn how to read and understand simple texts, write clear sentences and short texts such as emails. You will work on spelling common words and using capital letters and full stops. You will also practise taking part in conversations and group discussions.

Classes take place at Exeter Library in a small, friendly group. You will learn through tutor-led activities, group work and individual tasks. Tutors use a range of practical resources and real-life examples to support your learning and build confidence. Homework may be set to help you practise skills between sessions.

Entry requirements

The course is free. Before you start, you will need to meet with a Learning Adviser to check that this course is right for you. You will do a few simple tasks and talk about your English. To arrange an appointment, please contact your local Learn Devon centre.

Assessment criteria

Your tutor will give you spoken and written feedback, and you will use an Individual Learning Plan to track your progress. Assessment is formal but supportive and takes place during the course. This includes assessments in reading, writing, and speaking and listening, completed with your tutor.

What do I need?

You need to attend sessions regularly and take part in class activities. 

Classes are held at Exeter Library, a welcoming and accessible community venue. Please arrive on time and let Learn Devon staff know if you need any additional support to help you learn.

You will need a pen, highlighters and a notebook or A4 folder to keep you work organised. Access to a paper English dictionary would also be useful. Access to the internet at home can be helpful for extra practice and learning resources.

What can I do next?

After completing Entry Level 2 and 3, you can progress to Functional Skills English Level 1 and Level 2. These qualifications can help with employment, training or further study. Learn Devon also offers courses in Maths, ESOL, Digital Skills and Skills & Development.
