Exploring occupations - horticulture
Overview
This course is for individuals 19+ who are thinking about a career in the land-based sector and who have an interest in gardening. As this course leads to a qualification you will be asked to complete a short initial skills check around horticulture (with the tutor) and to provide a short piece of free writing (arranged by one of our learning advisors) before enrolling on the course to make sure this course is right for you.
This course will help you: Know characteristics of herbs fruit and vegetables and their uses Understand the factors to be considered in selecting herbs for a particular site Understand how to cultivate a range of herbs, vegetables and fruit Understand the factors relating to soil, growing media and the site Understand how to plant and maintain herb, vegetable and fruit plants
The course takes place on Tuesday mornings at the Arts Centre in Bideford. You will take part in discussions as well as working on your own and in a group. This is a mixed ability group, based on your initial skills check. Some learners will need to evidence some practical work (you will need to organise your own practical placement, allotment, volunteer role, etc). Other learners will need to do some assignment/project work in their own time.
