Everyday maths

Overview

This course is for adults who want to improve their confidence with everyday maths. It is suitable if you find maths challenging or want to strengthen practical skills for daily life, such as using money, telling the time, measuring, or understanding numbers. It is ideal for learners who are returning to education or who want to build skills before progressing to other maths courses.

You will develop practical maths skills used in everyday situations. Topics may include numbers, addition and subtraction, time, money, shape, measurement and simple problem solving. Learning focuses on real‑life examples to help you use maths more confidently at home, in your community, and at work.

You will learn in small, friendly and supportive classes led by experienced tutors. Sessions include tutor‑led activities, practical tasks, discussion and individual work. You can work at your own pace and get help when you need it. Courses run at Learn Devon centres across Devon at different times of the day.

Entry requirements

To start this course, you will first meet with one of our friendly learning advisors who will do a short initial assessment. This will make sure we can put you on the right course at the right level. To make an appointment with our team please contact your local Learn Devon centre.

Assessment criteria

When you are ready, you will complete a short assessment. Your tutor will discuss the options with you and agree the most suitable approach—this may include short units completed in class.

What do I need?

It may be useful for you to bring a pen, pencil, and a ruler, as well as some paper to write things down on. You can also bring a calculator.

What can I do next?

After completing this course, you may progress to another Everyday Maths course, a Pathway to Functional Skills Maths course, or a suitable Functional Skills Maths qualification. Your tutor will discuss your next steps and support you to plan progression.
