ESOL: Language for job interviews

Overview

This course is for adults who speak English as a second language and want to improve their English for job interviews. It is suitable for people who are looking for work, changing jobs, returning to work, or preparing for future employment. You will develop the language and confidence needed to take part in interviews and talk about your skills, experience and goals.

You will learn how to prepare for a job interview in English. Topics include introducing yourself, talking about your skills and experience, answering common interview questions, asking appropriate questions, understanding interview language and demonstrating confidence when speaking. You will also practise vocabulary and phrases commonly used in recruitment and employment.

You will learn through live online lessons with a tutor and other learners. Activities will include discussions, speaking practice, listening tasks, interview role-plays and practical exercises. You will have opportunities to practise answering interview questions, receive feedback, and build your confidence using English in interview situations.

Entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements, but you should be working at approximately Entry 3 – Level 2 ESOL level. You should be able to take part in conversations in English and access online classes using a computer or tablet.

Assessment criteria

There is no exam. Your tutor will support you and review your progress through class activities, discussions and interview practice. You will have opportunities to demonstrate your learning through role-plays and speaking tasks, helping you build confidence and prepare for real job interviews.

What do I need?

You will need a computer or tablet (a smartphone is too small to access the learning properly), internet access, speakers or headphones, a microphone, and a notebook or paper with a pen or pencil. You should also be prepared to take part in speaking activities and interview practice during lessons.

What can I do next?

After this course, you could apply your skills in real job interviews, join another ESOL course at a higher level, take a course focused on employability or work skills, or prepare for an accredited ESOL qualification. You may also feel more confident applying for jobs and communicating with employers in English.
