Certificate in understanding working with people with mental health needs (Level 2)

Overview

This course is for adults aged 19+ who want to develop their understanding of working with people with mental health needs. It is suitable for those entering health and social care, volunteers, or anyone wishing to better support individuals experiencing mental ill-health.

You will learn about mental health, the role of mental health workers, duty of care, care planning processes, and how to support individuals during mental health change. You’ll build core knowledge to understand needs, risks, legislation, professional roles, and support pathways.

Learning takes place through a mix of online and in person tutor-led classes, discussion, structured tasks and guided activities that help you build a portfolio of evidence. This qualification is knowledge-only, with no work placement required. The in person classes take place on the following dates at The Mint, Exeter: 17/11/26, 24/11/26, 15/12/26, 12/01/27, 09/03/27, 13/04/27, 25/05/27, 29/06/27, 06/07/27, 27/07/27, 03/08/27There are no classes on 22/12/26 or 29/12/26

Entry requirements

You should be aged 19+ and will be asked to complete a short skills check to ensure this is the right qualification for you. An interest in mental health and supporting others is helpful. You must be eligible to study in the UK. You will be asked to show a valid I.D and proof of income/employment status for funding purposes.

Assessment criteria

You will be supported to produce a portfolio of evidence which demonstrates your knowledge and understanding. Your tutor will work with you on this and give regular feedback on your progress. 

What do I need?

You will need a laptop or tablet with a good internet connection, a smartphone will not be suitable. You should have digital skills that enable you to access online learning and upload work.

You can progress onto higher level qualifications or consider employment options.

Funding information

This course is being funded by the Devon and Torbay Combined County Authority (DTCCA). To be able to provide you with this opportunity we need to ensure that you are eligible for funding and have to collect personal data for government monitoring of funding. You must live in Devon and have been normally resident in the UK for the past 3 years and have a legal right to receive this funding. You do not already hold this qualification at this level. We normally provide these courses free of charge and claim all your funding from the DTCCA if:

• You are attempting to achieve your first full level 2 (Excluding English or maths)
• You are unemployed, seeking work, claiming benefits and have annual earnings of less than £26,800
• You are employed or self-employed, but have annual earnings of less than £26,800
