Certificate in principles of team leading (Level 2)

Overview

This course if for anyone 19+ who is involved as a volunteer or who has a lay leadership role (licenced or not-yet licenced) in the Exeter Diocese, and who is wanting to develop their leadership skills and gain a Level 2 qualification in Team Leading. Possible contexts include: Reader Licenced Lay Minister Pioneer PCC member Volunteer project co-ordinator Volunteer team leader *Ask if you are not sure if this course is for you.

You will explore and reflect on your role as a lay leader in your specific church-based context. Themes covered include: Levels of authority and responsibility of the team leader in the organisation Leadership styles Action-centred leadership Motivation and shared purpose Communication Working relationships within the team, the organisation and beyond the organisation Personal development as a Team Leader Inclusive and safe working within a team

In order to complete the qualification you will need to evidence around 2-3 hours per week of volunteering/lay leadership activity throughout the course in addition to the Guided Learning Hours (made up of class attendance and 10 x short out-of-class assignments). You will also be asked to complete a reflective journal and a couple of one-to-one catch-ups (either teams or Zoom) with the tutor.

Entry requirements

As this course leads to the NCFE Team Leading (Level 2) Certificate qualification you will be asked to complete a brief interview with the tutor (via Teams/Zoom) and to submit a short piece of writing (as an Initial Skills check) before enrolling on the course in order to ensure this course is right for you. You will need to provide evidence of where you will undertake around 2-3 hours per week volunteer or lay leadership hours within the diocese between January and July 2026.

Assessment criteria

Throughout the course you will build a portfolio of evidence which will be submitted to the awarding body. There is no exam. Your tutor will support you in making sure everything you need is included in the portfolio. There will be a simple ILP (Individual Learning Plan) which the tutor will discuss with you individually, to make sure the class is meeting your needs.

What do I need?

You will find a pen/pencil or notebook useful, or your own electronic device. For assignments you will need Office 365 and access to the internet. Bring your own lunch!
