Overview

Would you like to enjoy the benefit of being connected to the online world but feel left out? Do you want to be able to use computers to keep in touch with friends but don’t know how to begin? Would you like to be able to search the internet, but do not feel safe? Maybe you’d like to access services that are moving online, but you lack confidence to try? If you’re a beginner or just bewildered by the internet, this course will give you the confidence and skills to join the digital world.

You will learn how to access the internet and to stay safe online; how to find and store useful or interesting websites so you can easily retrieve them; how to set up and use emails; and you will be taught to create simple documents (a letter) and save these into folders on your computer. You will also learn how to access goods and services like online shopping, banking, your doctors and the NHS, and travel information.

The course will be face to face with an experienced tutor and will include classroom-based activities in small groups.

Entry requirements

All you need for this course is enthusiasm to learn and be committed to attending all five sessions with your tutor.

Assessment criteria

You will receive feedback from your tutor in the sessions to let you know how you are progressing. An Individual Learning Plan will help you stay on track and identify what you need to do next. 

What do I need?

Everything you need for this course will be provided by Learn Devon.

You may like to make your own notes so a pen/pencil and notebook may be useful. 

What can I do next?

If you want to learn more about digital skills, you can enrol on to our free Essential Digital Skills qualification. This is a longer course and will build on what you have already learnt. Find out more by contacting your local Learn Devon Centre or ask your tutor for information.

Funding information

We provide Tailored learning opportunities on behalf of the Devon and Torbay Combined County Authority (DTCCA) who fund this learning and have to collect personal data for government monitoring of funding. You must live in Devon and have been normally resident in the UK for the past 3 years and have a legal right to receive this funding. We normally provided these courses free of charge, but if a fee is charged to you as a learner or your employer then we only receive half the funding from the DTCCA.
