Overview
This course is for individuals 19+ who are considering a career in health and care or who are interested in working or volunteering in the local community with people who may experience issues with their mental health and well-being.
This course will help you understand what we mean by mental health and well-being, understand different mental health conditions and treatment, know how to find support for mental health conditions and know how to look after your own mental health and wellbeing.
This course will usually take place in person. You will take part in discussions as well as working on your own and in a group. There will be an assignment each week (quizzes, finding things out, etc.) which you must complete in your own before the next session.
Entry requirements
There are no entry requirements other than being able to study at Level 1 and an interest in the topic. You must be eligible to study in the UK and will be asked to show a valid I.D. You may be asked for proof of income/employment status for funding purposes.
Assessment criteria
Throughout the course you will complete a portfolio which will be submitted to the awarding body. Your tutor will support you in making sure everything you need is included in the portfolio. There will be a simple ILP (Individual Learning Plan) which the tutor will discuss with you individually, to make sure the class is meeting your needs. You may also take part in discussions in the group about the session’s activities.
What do I need?
You will find a pen/pencil or notebook useful. You will also need access to a laptop or tablet connected to the internet. If the course is online, you will need a laptop or tablet and a reliable internet connection. A mobile phone is not suitable for online learning.

Funding information
This course is being funded by the Devon and Torbay Combined County Authority (DTCCA). To be able to provide you with this opportunity we need to ensure that you are eligible for funding and have to collect personal data for government monitoring of funding. You must live in Devon and have been normally resident in the UK for the past 3 years and have a legal right to receive this funding. You do not already hold this qualification at this level. We normally provide these courses free of charge and claim all your funding from the DTCCA if:
- You are attempting to achieve your first full level 2 (Excluding English or maths)
- You are unemployed, seeking work, claiming benefits and have annual earnings of less than £26,800
- You are employed or self-employed, but have annual earnings of less than £26,800
