Do you want to be an entrepreneur? Have you ever thought about starting your own business or earning money from a hobby, skill, or idea? This course is for young people, aged 16- 25 years old, who would like to explore entrepreneurship and learn what it takes to turn an idea into a business. Whether you are considering self-employment, a side hustle, or simply want to develop entrepreneurial skills, this course will help you build confidence to take your next steps.

You will explore what entrepreneurship means and the personal qualities of successful entrepreneurs. You will explore and identify potential business opportunities and use your interests and strengths to take your ideas from a concept to reality. You will learn about identifying your target audience and testing whether the business idea is viable through basic budgeting and pricing. You will explore simple marketing and promotion techniques and develop confidence in planning and presenting your

Throughout the course there will be presentations to provide information, practical activities and problem-solving tasks. There will be examples of entrepreneur success stories, discussion forums to share ideas from personal experience knowledge and research. Worksheets will be available for you to use to record your findings and help you develop and clarify your understanding of Entrepreneurship and business ideas.

Entry requirements

You should be between 16 and 25 years old, must have an interest in the topic and a commitment to completing the full course. You will be expected to complete an electronic enrolment form (an ipeg) with your details before the beginning of the course and a form to monitor your progress. This is for proof of your attendance for our funding body. You will be asked to show photo identification to the tutor and proof of your income.

Assessment criteria

Assessment for completion is based on attendance.

What do I need?

You will find a pen/pencil or notebook useful. You may be expected to carry out some additional tasks in your own time.

What can I do next?

After successfully completing the course, you can enrol onto the Devon Business Support programme delivered by Devon County Council to continue your business journey. The programme offers 1-6 hours of bespoke, expert advice through a combination of one-to-ones, workshops, networking, and peer-to-peer learning opportunities. The advisors can also support with accessing business mentorship programmes and applying for start-up grant opportunities.
