Overview

This qualification is designed for learners aged 19+ who wish to become qualified Early Years Educators. It is suitable for those looking to work with children from birth to 5 years in settings such as nurseries, preschools, or reception classes. It is ideal for learners who are already volunteering or working in a childcare setting or those who can secure a placement to gain the necessary practical experience.

You will cover 10 mandatory units focusing on the knowledge and skills required for the role. Topics include child development (from birth to 7 years), safeguarding and welfare, health and safety, supporting children with special educational needs (SEND), effective communication, partnership working, and understanding play for learning. You will also learn how to plan and lead effective early years curriculums.

Learning is a blend of theory and practical tasks. You will use online study materials and classroom sessions to cover the theory, which you will then apply directly in a real work environment. It is essential you have a job or placement of at least 300 hours in an early year's setting (working with children aged 0-5) to develop your skills.

Entry requirements

You must be aged 19+. Being employed or in a voluntary placement in an Early Years setting (min. 300 hours) is essential. Level 2 English is strongly recommended. You will be asked to complete a skills check and complete a short piece of writing. You must be eligible to study in the U.K and will need to show I.D and proof of income/benefits upon enrolling for funding purposes.

Assessment criteria

You will be assessed through a portfolio of evidence. This includes written assignments, tasks, and professional discussions. Crucially, you will also be assessed by direct observation of your practice in your workplace/placement to ensure you meet the required occupational standards. There may be a few in-person workshops for this course, location/date - to be confirmed

What do I need?

You need a confirmed placement in a childcare setting (e.g., day nursery or nursery school) catering to children aged 0-5. You will also need a clear Enhanced DBS check

Access to a computer or laptop and a reliable internet connection is required to access learning materials and upload your portfolio work. Using a mobile phone will not be acceptable.

What can I do next?

You can work as a qualified Early Years Educator, Nursery Nurse, or Childminder. You can also progress to higher-level qualifications or stay with us to complete your English or maths qualifications.

Funding information

This course is being funded by the Devon and Torbay Combined County Authority (DTCCA). To be able to provide you with this opportunity we need to ensure that you are eligible for funding and have to collect personal data for government monitoring of funding. You must live in Devon and have been normally resident in the UK for the past 3 years and have a legal right to receive this funding. You do not already hold this qualification at this level. We normally provide these courses free of charge and claim all your funding from the DTCCA if:

• You are attempting to achieve your first full level 2 (Excluding English or maths)
• You are unemployed, seeking work, claiming benefits and have annual earnings of less than £26,800
• You are employed or self-employed, but have annual earnings of less than £26,800
