Pathway to functional skills English

Overview

Are you returning to education? Or are you moving from one course to another? This course is an excellent place to start. It will help you build your understanding of English skills and confidence needed to progress to your next steps in learning.

You will engage with foundational English skills: reading, writing and speaking for everyday life and work at your level. You will gain confidence and prepare for progression to a suitable level qualification.

Our classes are face to face, small and welcoming. You will be taught by supportive and friendly tutors who provide lots of practical help and guidance. You will work with others and on your own.   Sessions will take place at the Retreat (Salvation Army) in Ilfracombe.

Entry requirements

This course is usually free. To enrol, you will need to talk to one of our friendly Learning Advisers. They will advise if the Pathway to Functional Skills is the right course for you. To make an appointment with our team, please contact your local Learn Devon centre.

Assessment criteria

Your tutor will assess you during the class and will give you feedback through your individual learning plan. You may also be given practice assessment questions so you can both see how you are doing.

What do I need?

You will need to attend sessions regularly and take part in class activities.

Please arrive on time and let Learn Devon staff know if you need any additional support to help you learn.

Bring a pen and a notebook or A4 folder to keep your work organised.

What can I do next?

You will be able to progress to a suitable English qualification which is nationally recognised. Our offer includes Functional Skills English, GCSE English Language and English for Speakers of Other Languages (Reading, Writing and Speaking and Listening).

Funding information

We provide Tailored learning opportunities on behalf of the Devon and Torbay Combined County Authority (DTCCA) who fund this learning and have to collect personal data for government monitoring of funding. You must live in Devon and have been normally resident in the UK for the past 3 years and have a legal right to receive this funding. We normally provided these courses free of charge, but if a fee is charged to you as a learner or your employer then we only receive half the funding from the DTCCA.
