Preparing to work with children (Level 1)

Overview

Are you interested in working with children? Considering a long-term qualification in childcare or teaching support work but not sure you’re ready? This short course rooted in child development could benefit you. You will achieve a L1 qualification in Exploring Occupational Studies - Understanding Children’s Social and Emotional Development.

You will understand the key elements and needs of children’s social and emotional development. You will also understand behavioural patterns, how and why children learn and how to encourage children to feel positive about themselves.

Whether online or face-to-face, there will be a blend of group discussions, videos, quizzes and tasks. You will reflect on your own experiences and share your findings with the tutor.

Entry requirements

Age of 19 years old (we can sometimes accept 16+, please ask) must have an interest in the topic and a commitment to complete the full course. You will need to provide valid I.D and may be asked for proof of income/employment status for funding. You must be eligible to study in the U.K.

Assessment criteria

You will complete a workbook which will be assessed, support will be given to complete the workbook in the classroom sessions.

What do I need?

Ideally you will have good basic digital skills to complete online work in the classroom. If you feel you will need support, or a paper workbook please talk to us. For online remote learning, you will need a laptop or tablet with reliable internet and software to complete assignments (Word/Google). Please note, a mobile phone is not suitable for online learning.

You will find a pen/pencil or notebook useful. You will be expected to carry out some additional finding things out tasks in your own time of one hour a week.

Progression can be onto our Early Years Diploma, Support Work in Schools or Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools courses. You may also find it helps find employment.

Funding information

This course is being funded by the Devon and Torbay Combined County Authority (DTCCA). To be able to provide you with this opportunity we need to ensure that you are eligible for funding and have to collect personal data for government monitoring of funding. You must live in Devon and have been normally resident in the UK for the past 3 years and have a legal right to receive this funding. You do not already hold this qualification at this level. We normally provide these courses free of charge and claim all your funding from the DTCCA if:

• You are attempting to achieve your first full level 2 (Excluding English or maths)
• You are unemployed, seeking work, claiming benefits and have annual earnings of less than £26,800
• You are employed or self-employed, but have annual earnings of less than £26,800
