These pages are for staff working for Devon County Council. We mainly support vocational qualifications to those working within Health and Social Care services, across both adults’ and children’s services. Therefore the majority of the qualifications we offer are specific to people working within those sectors. However, we are also able to offer some general qualifications across all services such as Management.
Vocational qualifications are based on national occupational standards. These standards are statements of performance that describe what competent people in a particular occupation are expected to be able to do. They cover all the main aspects of an occupation, including current best practice, the ability to adapt to future requirements and the knowledge and understanding that underpin competent performance.
These qualifications work by testing your abilities in the workplace. To complete this you need to prove that you can do certain work-related tasks.
They are assessed in a combination of ways:
- by portfolio – you build up evidence of what you’ve done at work
- by observation – an assessor watches you work and checks that you can do the tasks.
The assessor tests knowledge, understanding and work-based performance to make sure the learner can demonstrate competence in the workplace. Some job roles have mandatory requirements to complete a qualification, so you will be advised by your manager – if you are unsure you can email the qualifications team at firstname.lastname@example.org to answer any questions you may have.
