Healthy Eating in East Devon

Parents at an East Devon primary school have benefitted from a ‘Healthy Eating” course offered through Learn Devon’s Family Learning Curriculum.

Over a five-week period, the course supported 10 disadvantaged parents and grandparents as they learnt how to cook healthier meals for their families. This was a pilot course run by one of Learn Devon’s Family Learning tutors, Laura.

Through the course, learners have been preparing meals from scratch, cooking with new ingredients and encouraging their children to try new things. One of the outcomes of the course has been that all parents went home with a healthy nutritious meal to feed their family after every session.

The learners have had a sense of achievement through the preparation of food that not only looks and tastes delicious, but has boosted their confidence in cooking. The course has been viewed as valuable and worthwhile, especially in this current cost of living crisis. The group of parents have bonded together, and this has helped their overall outlook and wellbeing.

Speaking about the course, one parent said: ‘I cook from scratch now, whereas before I never bothered.’

Learn Devon wouldn’t have been able to run this course without the time and support of the primary school and the generosity of Exmouth Foodbank and the Community Larder.
