GCSE Frequently Asked Questions
Below we have answered some of the questions we get frequently asked by our learners.
Are your GCSE courses really free?
Yes! Our GCSE courses are completely free if you don’t already have a GCSE maths or English qualification at C/3 or above. You must also have lived in the UK or the EU for the past 3 years and be aged 19+ on or before the 31st August 2021.
What support is available to learners at Learn Devon?
We have a dedicated learning support team available to all our learners as we understand that you may need extra support to help with your learning. They can help by supplying laptops and resources for those who need them, providing coloured overlays for those struggling with dyslexia, or even allocate more time for exams. You will also have your tutor’s email address so you can reach out to them with any questions you may have during your learning. Click here for more information on learning support.
What are the classes like?
Our GCSE classes are small and welcoming ensuring you get the attention you need. You will be taught by supportive and friendly tutors who provide lots of practical help and guidance. Most of our courses starting in September will be taught online, via Zoom, with a limited number of courses taught face to face in our centres.
What are the reasons learners enrol on GCSE courses?
We work with learners of all ages and from all walks of life. Our courses can help our learners enhance their career prospects, enable them to enter further education and training or help them support their children with homework.
How often do you have to attend classes?
As you will be completing an intense qualification course in just under 10 months, it is essential that you commit to attending your classes each week. Your first four sessions in September will help determine whether studying towards a GCSE qualification is the most suitable route for you, or if you should explore enrolling on a Functional Skills course.
How much homework do you have to complete?
Our tutors will use weekly homework to help you practise, check understanding of topics covered and also to provide feedback on your progress. It is essential that you commit to completing your homework each week as well as catch up on any missed sessions. This will take approximately 3 hours each week on top of class time.
When are exams?
Maths exams will take place at the end of May and English exams will take place at the start of June. The dates will be set nationally and unfortunately are not flexible, so you will have to ensure you are available to attend the exam dates. As soon as these dates have been set we will update all of our prospective learners.
Are the exams difficult?
Completing a GCSE qualification is a big achievement and the exams can sometimes seem challenging. However, our tutors will work with you throughout the year to ensure you are prepared for them and feel confident when taking the exams.
What resources do you need for the course?
For our GCSE courses you will need textbooks, a pen, pencil and a notebook. If you will be attending your classes online you will also need a computer, a stable internet connection as well as an external or built-in microphone and camera. You will be informed on exactly what resources you need by our friendly Learning Support Coordinators during your Virtual Enrolment Session.
Do you have any other questions?
Our team are also always here to help so please free to get in touch with your nearest centre and they will do their very best to assist you in any way they can.
