GCSEs are a desirable qualification for almost everyone and a ‘must’ for many careers. If you haven’t already achieved maths or English GCSE at grade C or above, you can study them for free (eligibility criteria apply) with Learn Devon.

Our team of tutors are experienced with working with adult learners and provide a friendly environment in which to learn. The class sizes are small and welcoming.

The courses themselves are intensive and start in September. Enrolments are taken all year round for courses starting the following September. If you are keen to achieve your maths or English GCSE, please read the information below to find out more about studying with us.

  • developing a personal style and awareness of the audience being addressed.

commitment

Our GCSE programmes are intensive. At school, you may have had two or three years to prepare for GCSE exams, but on our programme you will have around eight months. Your own success will depend on full commitment from you. We do not recommend studying both the maths and English GCSEs in the same year.

home study

In class time, your tutor will guide you and help prepare you for exams, but this alone will not be enough for you to achieve a grade C equivalent or above at GCSE. Home study is essential – without it, you will not get your qualification.

We will require you to spend at least two hours outside of class each week studying and completing assignments. We will also expect you to submit completed assignments on time. In the run-up to exams, you will need to dedicate extra home study time to revision.

attendance

You must commit to attending at least 90% of scheduled classes, which run for at least two hours 30 minutes each week. Our intensive courses move on quickly and if you do not come to every class you will get left behind, with little chance
of catching up.

However, we know that ill health or emergencies may prevent you attending occasional sessions. If this is the case during your course, please contact us to let us know you will be unable to attend.

key dates

All GCSE qualifications have final exams in the summer. The dates of these exams are set by the awarding organisation. You will not be able to take the exams on different dates, so you must be available for them. We will let you know the dates as soon as they are confirmed. Please do not book holidays or other commitments until you know when the exams are.

what to do now

If you are keen to study for maths or English GCSE with us and are happy to make the required commitment, please contact us.

We will make an appointment for you to have a free skills check and interview with a tutor at your local Learn Devon centre. This will enable us to find out what skill level you are at and assess your commitment to gaining your GCSE, so that we can put you on the right maths or English programme.

We will let you know in writing within a week of this session whether or not you have been admitted onto our programme. If you are successful, you will need to sign to confirm you can make the necessary commitment to your course. If you are not successful, we can discuss with you alternative learning options that might be more suitable for you.

If you are under 19 years old, you will be referred to our Learning Support team before enrolling.

support for your learning

We understand that sometimes you may need extra support to aid your learning. Learning Support is designed to give you the help you need to access your chosen course. Any learner can request support.

If you feel that our GCSE programme is not right for you, we may be able to suggest other vocational skills, Skills for Life or non-accredited courses that are more suitable for you. Please contact us to find out how we can help.
