Stepping stones to GCSE English

Overview

This course is designed for anyone who wants to obtain a GCSE English qualification but would like to improve their study skills and get a head start with the Pearsons GCSE English syllabus before joining a GCSE class in September.

You will develop your skills and understanding in analysing and interpreting a variety of texts; clear communication; accurate and effective writing including a personal style of writing and the use of a wide variety of vocabulary, correct grammar, spelling and punctuation.

Our classes are small and welcoming, you will work with others and on your own. You will be taught by supportive and friendly tutors who provide lots of practical help and guidance. The course is usually free of charge* and available online and in centres across Devon during the daytime or in evenings, so you can fit study around your own requirements.

Entry requirements

*Stepping Stones to English GCSE is free. However, funding also depends on you meeting certain UK/EU residency requirements. If you are unsure, our Learn Devon centre teams can assist with this when you enquire. To enrol, you will first need to meet with one of our friendly Learning Advisers. Through a skills check they will make sure that Stepping Stones English GCSE is the right course for you. To make an appointment with our team please contact your local Learn Devon centre.

Assessment criteria

Your tutor will assess you within the class and will give you feedback through your individual learning plan. Your tutor may also give you practice assessment questions, so you can both see how you are progressing.

What do I need?

You will need a pen, pencil and a notebook. If you are studying online, you will need to have access to a laptop or tablet and a reliable wi-fi network. It is essential that you can commit to weekly attendance as well as completing weekly homework. Homework will be used to practice and check your understanding of topics covered and provide feedback on your progress.

Our tutors are supportive and friendly, and they also work with our learning support assistants who are at hand to help you with any learning difficulties or disabilities you may have. Your progress will be tracked, and you will be encouraged to take responsibility for your own learning. Using a tailored learning plan our tutors will provide you with feedback to help you achieve your learning goals and predict your end grade.

What can I do next?

You will be able to progress to a Pearsons GCSE qualification in English which is nationally recognised and is often required by employers and education providers in both further and higher education. A GCSE in English is vital for a broad variety of careers, and in order to access most degree level courses.
