Stepping stones to GCSE English

Overview

This course is designed for anyone who wants to obtain a GCSE English qualification but would like to improve the skills they will need before joining a GCSE class in September.

You will develop your skills and understanding in analysing and interpreting a variety of texts; clear communication; accurate and effective writing including a personal style of writing and the use of a wide variety of vocabulary, grammar, spelling and punctuation.

Our classes are small and welcoming, you will work with others and on your own. You will be taught by supportive and friendly tutors who provide lots of practical help and guidance. The course is usually free of charge* and available online.

Entry requirements

Stepping Stones to English GCSE is free. However, funding also depends on you meeting certain UK/EU residency requirements. If you are unsure, our Learn Devon centre teams can assist with this when you enquire. To enrol, you will first need to meet with one of our friendly Learning Advisers. What do I need?

You will need a pen, pencil and a notebook. As the course is online you will need to have access to a laptop or tablet and a reliable wi-fi network. It is essential that you can commit to weekly attendance as well as completing weekly homework. Homework will be used to practise and check your understanding of topics covered and provide feedback on your progress.

What can I do next?

You will be able to progress to a Pearsons GCSE qualification in English Language which is nationally recognised and is often required by employers and education providers in both further and higher education. A GCSE in English is vital for a broad variety of careers, and to access most degree level courses.
