Preparing to work with children

Overview

Are you interested in working with children? Considering a long-term qualification in childcare or teaching support work but not sure you’re ready? This short course rooted in child development could benefit you. You will achieve a L1 qualification in Understanding Children’s Social and Emotional Development.

You will understand the key elements and needs of children’s social and emotional development. You will also understand behavioural patterns, how and why children learn and how to encourage children to feel positive about themselves.

You will attend our online course with a blend of group discussions, videos, quizzes and tasks. You will reflect on your own experiences and share your findings with the tutor.

Entry requirements

Eligible learners over the age of 19 years old (we can sometimes accept 16+, please ask) must have an interest in the topic and a commitment to complete the full course.

Assessment criteria

You will complete a workbook which will be assessed, support will be given to complete the workbook in the classroom sessions.

What do I need?

Ideally you will have good basic digital skills to complete online work. If you feel you will need support, or a paper workbook please talk to us.

You will find a pen/pencil or notebook useful. You will be expected to carry out some additional finding things out tasks in your own time of one hour a week.

Progression can be onto our Early Years Diploma, Support Work in Schools or Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools courses. You may also find it helps find employment.
