English study skills

Overview

This course is designed for anyone who wants to obtain an English Level 1 or Level 2 qualification but would like to improve the skills they will need before joining a Functional Skills class.

You will learn study and time management skills. Your tutor will teach you how to read and answer assessment questions as well as revising grammar, spelling and punctuation. You will also gain confidence with speaking & listening tasks.

Our classes are small and welcoming, you will work with others and on your own. You will be taught by supportive and friendly tutors who provide lots of practical help and guidance. The course is usually free of charge* and available online.

Entry requirements

Preparation for Functional Skills is free. However, funding also depends on you meeting certain UK/EU residency requirements. If you are unsure, our Learn Devon centre teams can assist with this when you enquire.

Assessment criteria

Your tutor will assess you within the class and will give you feedback through your individual learning plan. Your tutor may also give you practice assessment questions, so you can both see how you are progressing.

What do I need?

You will need a pen, pencil and a notebook. As the course is online you will need to have access to a laptop or tablet and a reliable wi-fi network. It is essential that you can commit to weekly attendance as well as completing weekly homework. Homework will be used to practise and check your understanding of topics covered and provide feedback on your progress.

What can I do next?

You will be able to progress to a Functional Skills qualification which is nationally recognised and is often required by employers and education providers in both further and higher education.
