Award in mentoring (Level 2)

Overview

Do you work or volunteer in a support service and interested in developing mentoring skills? This nationally recognised Level 2 qualification enables you to gain a deeper understand the role of a mentor and develop the skills needed to become an effective mentor. 

You will gain insight into the role and practice of mentorship, be clear about mentor/mentee relationships, ensure you follow good practice, develop the specific skills and understanding you will require in order to mentor . You will also learn how to reflect on your own learning and work performance, understand the benefits of mentoring and understand legal and ethical mentoring requirements.

Most of the learning happens through tutor led face to face or online sessions and independent research. There will be a mixture of tasks and discussions, Q&A and time to practice your skills. If the session is online, the tutor will use break out rooms for small group work and there will be some e-learning to support your development. You will be encouraged to share good practice with other learners in group discussions.

Entry requirements

You will need to be working or volunteering in a setting where you are working with people in a supportive role, or have an interest in this as a future job role and can meet the learning requirements of the award. There are no formal entry requirements for this course, but you will need an appropriate level of literacy to complete your qualification and be able to commit some time each week for independent study time. You may be required to complete a short skills check before you enrol.

Assessment criteria

Your tutor will review and assess your progress against the qualification criteria. This will be through asking questions to check your understanding of the knowledge and reviewing evidence. You will be required to build a portfolio of evidence, this can include explanations, case study, reflective practice and will include an observation of you planning for and delivering a mentoring session.

What do I need?

You will need a laptop or tablet and reliable internet to join online sessions. You will need a quiet place to study and agreed time to complete your qualification. All course materials with be provided during the sessions, if you are interested to research further, you will need access to the internet or your local library service.

For online sessions you will need an ICT device connected to the internet. Please note, a mobile phone is not suitable for online learning. For all sessions, it’s often handy to have a pen and some paper, or a notebook available, if you want to make notes.

What can I do next?

Learners may wish to progress to a Level 3 Mentoring or Coaching qualification and identifying progression options are built into the programme. Progression: Start your career as a mentor, enter further or higher education for higher level courses, improve opportunities to expanding your role or to work in different areas of your organisation.
