Functional skills - English

Overview

This is an English course where you are able to gain an accredited Level 1 or Level 2 English Functional Skills qualification.

English Functional Skills will help you build on the English skills you need for everyday life and work, such as writing official letters, emails and job application letters. You will also learn to look for the meaning in different types of writing. In our English classes you will meet new people and to get to know them as you practise discussing different topics within your class.

Our classes are small and welcoming. In the sessions, you will work with a group and on your own. You will be taught by friendly, experienced English tutors using lots of different learning resources to support your learning and provide lots of practical guidance and support. Your tutor will also suggest homework which will help you with your work in class.

Entry requirements

This course is free. To enrol on this course, you will first need to talk to one of our friendly Learning Advisers. They will arrange a meeting and give you some simple tasks to carry out to make sure that this is the right course for you and that this is the correct class for your skill level. Assessment criteria

Your tutor will give you spoken and written feedback to help you make progress by completing your ILP (Individual Learning Plan) and by discussion with you in your classes. You will be able to take an English Functional Skills qualification at either Level 1 or Level 2, in speaking, listening & communication, reading and writing.

What do I need?

This course is free and has no special requirements.

It would be helpful to have access to the internet and a device such as a smartphone, tablet or laptop to access further learning resources online. If this course is online, you will need a laptop or tablet to access it.

You will need a pen, pencil, eraser, a notebook and/or A4 folder. Access to a paper English dictionary would also be useful.

What can I do next?

You can make progress by taking Pearsons English Functional Skills qualifications up to Level 2 (a Learning Adviser can explain this to you when you speak to them). If you are successful at Level 2 you can then take an English GCSE qualification. Learn Devon are also able to offer courses in Essential Digital Skills, Maths and Skills & Development.
