Everyday English - join at any time

Overview

This is a basic course you can join at any time and at a level suited to you. If you would like to boost your opportunities in the workplace, help your children with their homework, or brush up your knowledge, then this is the course for you.

Everyday English will help you build on the English skills you need for everyday life and work, such as writing official letters, emails and job application letters. You will also learn to look for the meaning in different types of writing. Our Everyday English classes can be an opportunity to meet new people and to get to know them as you practise discussing different topics within your class.

Whether online or in centre, our classes are small and welcoming. In the sessions, you will work with a group and on your own. The tutors will use lots of different learning resources in your class, including games and activities, to help you with your learning. You will be taught by supportive and friendly English tutors who provide lots of practical help, guidance and support. Your tutor will also suggest activities you can do outside of the class which will help you with your work in class.

Entry requirements

This course is free. To enrol on this course, you will first need to talk to one of our friendly Learning Advisers. They will arrange a meeting and give you some simple tasks to carry out to make sure that this is the right course for you and that you are put in the correct class for your skill level. Assessment criteria

Your tutor will give you spoken and written feedback to help you make progress by completing your ILP (Individual Learning Plan) and by discussion with you in your classes. You will be able to take an English Functional Skills qualification, at a level suited to you, in speaking, listening and communication, reading and writing.

What do I need?

This course is free and has no special requirements. You will need a pen, pencil, eraser, a notebook and/or A4 folder. Access to a paper English dictionary would also be useful. It would be helpful to have access to the internet and a device such as a smartphone, tablet or laptop to access further learning resources online. If this course is online, you will need a laptop or tablet to access it.

What can I do next?

You are able to make progress by taking Pearsons English Functional Skills qualifications up to Level 2 (a Learning Adviser can explain this to you when you speak to them). From Level 2 you can then take an English GCSE qualification. Learn Devon are also able to offer courses in Essential Digital Skills, Everyday Maths and Employability.
