ESOL: Speaking and listening for speakers of other languages

Overview

This course is for anyone who does not speak English as a first language and would like to learn to communicate with confidence in English.

This course will also help you communicate in all aspects of life in the UK such as employment, healthcare, travelling on public transport and British culture and will give you confidence speaking and listening in your everyday life. You will talk to others in your group and practise pronunciation. You will meet new people from different countries and cultures, so it could be an excellent opportunity to make new friends. 

Your weekly lessons will be taught online by one of our friendly and supportive ESOL tutors. Our classes are small and welcoming and you will work with others and on your own. The classes will be interactive and the tutors will use a variety of learning resources, including games and activities. Your tutor may also suggest activities you can do either inside or outside of the home to support your learning in class.

Entry requirements

To enrol on this course, you will first need to talk to one of our friendly Learning Support Coordinators. They will arrange a meeting and give you some simple tasks to carry out to make sure that this is the right course for you and that you are placed on the correct qualification suited to your skill level. Assessment criteria

Your tutor will continually assess you and provide you with verbal and written feedback to help you make progress by completing your ILP (Individual Learning Plan) and by discussion in your classes. You will then have the opportunity take assessments at a Learn Devon centre at a level suited to you with Gateway qualifications in speaking, listening & communication at the end of the course.

What do I need?

This course is free and available online, so you will need a laptop, or tablet, with a camera and microphone and reliable internet access, to take part in the course.

You will need a pen, pencil, eraser and a notebook. An English dictionary or a bilingual dictionary (in your first language) would also be useful.

What can I do next?

ESOL Speaking & Listening will lead to taking a speaking, listening and communication ESOL qualification at a level suited to you, accredited by Gateway Qualifications. You will then be able to progress to further accredited qualifications in ESOL reading, writing or speaking and listening.
