English - Roll on roll off

Overview

This course can help you enhance your career prospects, provide you with access to further education, help you support your family with their English skills or improve your skills for personal reasons. The course is available in centres across Devon during the daytime or in evenings, so you can fit study around your own requirements.

Improve Your English covers different Functional Skills qualification levels from Entry 1 to Level 2, so the content will be designed to meet your needs. This will include the skills of communication (speaking & listening) reading and writing. After checking which level is right for you, our tutors will tailor your learning around your needs.

Our classes are small and welcoming. You will be taught by supportive and friendly tutors who provide lots of practical help and guidance. Your progress will be tracked, and you will be encouraged to take responsibility for your own learning. Using a learning plan our tutors will provide you with feedback to help you achieve your goals.  You will be given weekly homework which will help with your progress.

Entry requirements

This course is free. To enrol on this course, you will first need to talk to one of our friendly Learning Support Coordinators. They will arrange a meeting and give you some simple tasks to carry out to make sure that this is the right course for you and that this is the correct class for your skill level. Assessment criteria

Your tutor will give you spoken and written feedback to help you make progress by completing your ILP (Individual Learning Plan) with you. There will be three formal Functional Skills assessments during your course in speaking & listening, reading and writing. Your tutor will give you the date of these when you join the course. These assessments will be taken in your nearest centre either in class, or in one of our assessment sessions.

What do I need?

This course is free and has no special requirements.

You will need a pen, pencil, eraser, a notebook and/or A4 folder. Access to a paper English dictionary would also be useful.

What can I do next?

Your next step could be a Functional Skills English course at a higher level, or an English GCSE qualification. Learn Devon are also able to offer courses in Essential Digital Skills, Maths and Employability.
