English Functional skills Level 2 Distance learning

Overview

This is an English course where you are able to gain an accredited Level 2 English Functional Skills qualification through independent distance learning.

English Functional Skills through distance learning will help you build on the English skills you need for everyday life and work, such as writing official letters, emails and job application letters. You will also learn to look for the meaning in different types of writing. You will need to attend the speaking and listening sessions where you will practise talking about your interests and discussing current topics with your tutor and peers.

This course is online although your assessment will be in one of our centres. You will need to be present online for the speaking and listening element of the qualification but you will be expected to work independently for the written part of the course; arranging tutorials with your tutor to discuss your progress. Your tutor will give feedback, guidance and support on the work you have completed. You will be directed to lots of different learning resources to support your learning.

Entry requirements

This course is free. To enrol on this course, you will first need to talk to one of our friendly Learning Advisers. They will arrange a meeting and give you some simple tasks to carry out to make sure that this is the right course for you and that this is the correct class for your skill level. Assessment criteria

Your tutor will give you spoken and written feedback to help you make progress by completing your ILP (Individual Learning Plan) and by discussion with you in your tutorials. You will be able to take an English Functional Skills qualification at either Level 1 or Level 2, in speaking, listening & communication, reading and writing. Your written assessments will be held in person at the Learn Devon exams centre closest to you.

What do I need?

This course is free and has no special requirements.

Access to a quiet space with good internet connection is advisable to assist your study.

This course is delivered online via Google Classroom. You will need a laptop or tablet with keyboard to access. A smartphone is not suitable. You will also need a pen, pencil, eraser, a notebook and/or A4 folder. Access to a paper English dictionary would also be useful.

What can I do next?

You can make progress by taking Pearsons English Functional Skills qualifications at Level 2 (a Learning Adviser can explain this to you when you speak to them). If you are successful at Level 2 you can then take an English GCSE qualification. Learn Devon are also able to offer courses in Essential Digital Skills, Maths and Skills & Development.
