Award in preparing for self -employment

Overview

This course is for anyone thinking about or in the early stages of starting up their own business. You may have already completed an Entry Level qualification in business startup or self-employment and wish to progress.

the course will help you to become aware of the self-employment opportunities available, the skills and behaviours needed to be successful, the practicalities of being self-employed and the support available to you. You will also consider sources of income and types of expenditure, and associated record-keeping.

you will take part in discussions as well as working on your own and in a group. There will be some assignments which you must complete in your own time. The course may take place in a classroom with a tutor present and involve some online learning, or it could be a solely online class. If the course is virtual the tutor will work with the whole group in a virtual classroom as well as putting you into smaller groups in breakout rooms to complete tasks.

Entry requirements

you will need to be over the age of 19 and have an interest in exploring aspects of being self-employed for yourself, family, friends or as an entry point to further studying with Learn Devon. There are no formal entry requirements for this course, but you will need an appropriate level of literacy to complete your qualification. This will be via an online BKSB skills assessment. If the course is online, you will need to be able to access and use our online teaching platform

Assessment criteria

Your tutor will review and assess your progress against the qualification criteria. This will be through asking questions to check your understanding of the knowledge and reviewing your assignments. Throughout the course you will complete a portfolio which will be submitted to the awarding body. Your tutor will support you in making sure everything you need is included in the portfolio. What do I need?

You will need access to the internet to join the online sessions with an ICT device such as a laptop or tablet. You will need a quiet place to study and agreed time to complete your qualification. All course materials with be provided during the sessions, if you are interested to research further, you will need access to the internet or your local library service.

For online sessions you will need an ICT device connected to the internet. For all sessions, it’s often handy to have a pen and some paper, or a notebook available, if you want to make notes.
