Climate change - communication challenge

Alexander Centre, Tavistock

Who is this course for?

The course is for anyone who wants to encourage others to act in response to climate change. For example:

• You know climate change matters, but find it hard to share your concerns with friends or colleagues?
• You can see ways your workplace or community group could respond – but have to persuade them?
• You are trying to market activities or products which help people move to a lower carbon lifestyle?
• You want to use democracy or consumer power to get practical change?

Course content

You will be introduced to principles about effective communication on climate change, covering conversation, pictures and writing.

This draws on research-based materials from national charity Climate Outreach, which aims to ensure climate change and its impacts are understood, accepted and acted on.

The session will include presentation, short videos, discussion and case studies.

Note that the course does not teach why climate change is happening or the merits of alternative ways of responding to it.

Support and feedback

You will have the opportunity to talk to other participants about your aims and experience and how you might apply the learning in your own context.

Additional costs and requirements

There are no entry requirements, but you may find it helpful to look at some examples of media coverage of stories related to climate change.

Handouts will be provided, but you may want to bring a means of jotting down notes.

Wifi is available in the room if you wish to connect your own device.

Will I have to do anything outside of the session?

No – this is a single session course. There will be ideas for application which you can take away, and those will help you prepare for the four session course (WB9618), should you choose to do that as well.
