Creative writing: How to write a children's story: FULL
Who is this course for?
This course is suitable for adults who are interested in learning how to write children’s books. Complete beginners are welcome. A great opportunity to write a children’s story. What were your favourites? Take a look at children’s stories and see what the main character(s) get up to! See how you can make the storyline fun, interesting and even educative! It can be unusual, imaginative, fantastical and even witty!
This course is offered online to support continued learning during lockdown.
Please note if/when lockdown is lifted this course may be redirected to face to face learning.
The time and day will remain the same, along with your tutor.
The venue for direct learning will be online.
Course content
You will look first hand at how children’s stories are constructed; noting how potentially complex ideas can be put across simply. You will take part in discussions; create a main character and your own storyline in an imaginative & fun way.
Support and feedback
Your tutor will be advising you throughout the workshop and will suggest possible progression routes and other Learn Devon courses which may be suitable.
Additional costs and requirements
You will need a laptop / PC / phone / tablet with a camera and microphone/headphones and a good internet connection.
You will need pen and paper to jot down notes & a quiet space to work in.
Will I have to do anything outside of the session?
The tutor will suggest ideas on what to practice in your own time and will signpost you to other opportunities to support your learning. Homework will be set weekly – it may be a story/poem & your tutor will send you feedback online.
About the tutor
Jill Hobbs teaches Creative Writing for Learn Devon across Devon. Creative Writing encompasses fiction, autobiography, biography and poetry. She has worked for Devon County teaching at a variety of Primary Schools and 2 years working with adults with special needs.
Jill has a Masters Degree in Education specialising in inclusion, special needs and dyslexia, allowing Jill to invent and initiate a number of sensorial ways for teaching. Building on this pedagogy, Jill completed a Foundation in Art Therapy to understand the way in which Art plays a significant part in making sense of symbols and concepts as well as developing fine motor skills.
