Who is this course for?

This course is suitable for anyone who has good literacy skills and would like to develop their creative writing skills.

An opportunity to work with an experienced tutor to develop your own ideas and experiences of the sea. You can develop the theme and topics to write short stories or poems, using literary devices to help create the sea in all its moods.

Course content

You will look at experiences you’ve had beside the sea and talk about how to develop them into characters and plots. In addition, you will look at poems about the sea, and learn how to write your own, using imagery and other literary devices.

You’ll write short stories, poems and short descriptive passages about the sea.

Support and feedback

You will receive support and guidance throughout each session, and online feedback from the tutor for your submitted piece of work.

Additional costs and requirements

Paper and pen or Laptop to take notes.

This course is offered as classroom-based learning at Teignmouth Library

Please note that if regional lockdown is activated this course will be offered as on-line learning via zoom.

The time, day and tutor will remain the same.

To be able to take part in online learning you will be sent a zoom invitation with your access code, you will require a PC, laptop or phone with camera and microphone.

Fees for paid courses will be refunded pro rata as outlined in our fees policy if you are unable to continue your sessions.

Will I have to do anything outside of the session?

You will submit a piece of writing weekly:

either a poem, short story, or piece of descriptive writing

About the tutor

Jill Hobbs teaches Creative Writing for Learn Devon across Devon. Creative Writing encompasses fiction, autobiography, biography and poetry. She has worked for Devon County teaching at a variety of Primary Schools and 2 years working with adults with special needs.

Jill has a Masters Degree in Education specialising in inclusion, special needs and dyslexia, allowing Jill to invent and initiate a number of sensorial ways for teaching. Building on this pedagogy, Jill completed a Foundation in Art Therapy to understand the way in which Art plays a significant part in making sense of symbols and concepts as well as developing fine motor skills.
