He also is a specialist in teaching Maths, gaining a level 5 Additional Diploma in Numeracy. He recently (2015) completed a Master’s Degree in Professional Practice (with Distinction) at the University of St Mark and St John, specialising in exploiting open source technology.

Simon has taught maths for over 10 years with Learn Devon specialising in functional skills classes for adults.

“I’m a great believer in ‘experiential learning’; I firmly believe that people learn by doing. This is so important, particularly with methodical subjects like ICT or maths.

There is nothing more rewarding than seeing someone gain in confidence, particularly with mathematical topics that they once judged themselves to be ‘rubbish’ at. To see a learner enjoy doing maths after years of ‘hating’ the topic from school days is what adult education is all about.

It is that familiarity with these perceived complex tasks that build on a person’s levels of confidence and skills.”
