Who is this course for?
This course is for anyone from complete beginner to intermediate players.
Depending on your level you will be assessed and given tasks that should improve your playing. Complete beginners will be shown how to tune the guitar and some basic chord shapes and scales.
Support and feedback
You will be given continuous feedback from the tutor throughout the course.
Additional costs and requirements
You will need to bring a guitar with you and ideally a tuner. It is advised that learners bring acoustic guitars. If you are only able to bring an electric guitar then please contact the centre prior to enrolment.
You may be eligible for a learner bursary if you can demonstrate that attending a course will improve your wellbeing. Eligibility is determined after a short interview with a member of our learning support team. You must be aged over 19 on 31st August 2017 and your household income below £15,276 to access this fund. Contact your local centre for more details.
Will I have to do anything outside of the session?
You will be expected to practice regularly between sessions.
About the tutor
John Austen works as an Area Tutor (Maths) for Learn Devon and teaches guitar and is based in West Devon. Prior to this his posts have included school teacher, literacy/numeracy tutor, management training consultant and Skills for Life numeracy tutor – amounting to over 40 years experience in education.
John has been playing the guitar for over 50 years and was a professional musician throughout the 1970s. He teaches guitar and bass on a 1-1 basis and has helped many people over the years to learn to play. He is looking forward to working with a group and getting everyone playing together.
