Who is this course for?
This course is offered online to support continued learning during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Please note that if/when this course can run face to face, the time and day will remain the same, along with your tutor.
The venue for direct learning will be the Passmore Edwards Centre in Newton Abbot.
This course is for anyone wanting to improve their maths. This can range from entry level all the way up to Level 2 qualifications. You can enrol at any time throughout the year and our tutors will tailor your learning exactly around your needs. This is a very flexible course, you will work at your own pace and you will be set your own goals. There will be lots of progression opportunities available to you along the way.
We encourage anyone to enrol who wants to improve their maths, whether that’s to help their children with their homework, to gain a qualification for further studies or just to brush up on their skills. This course will help you boost your employment opportunities and prepare you for further study.
As the course covers different qualification levels the content will be designed to meet your exact needs. This will include numbers and their use in everyday life, working with data and creating graphs.
Our classes are small and welcoming, you will work with others and on your own. You will also be using a computer to do some research and other activities to enhance your study experience. We encourage you to regularly attend our classes and to spend some extra time on self-study at home.
You will be working with your tutor in a virtual learning environment using an online video platform called Zoom. You will be accompanied in your virtual class, with other learners.
Support and feedback
Our tutors are supportive and friendly, they work with our learning support assistants who are at hand to help you with any learning difficulties or disabilities. Your progress will be tracked, and you will be encouraged to take responsibility for your own learning. Using a tailored learning plan our tutors will provide you with feedback to help you achieve your learning goals.
Additional costs and requirements
You will need a laptop / PC / phone / tablet with a camera and microphone/headphones and a good internet connection.
To enrol in this course, you will first need to meet with one of our friendly Learning Support Coordinators. Through a skills check they will make sure that this is the right course for you. To make an appointment with our team please contact your local Learn Devon centre.
We will supply you with all the text books you may need during your course. You will need to bring along an A4 file, writing materials and lined or squared paper to your first lesson. For some lessons you may also need a geometry set, including a ruler, protractor and compass.
Will I have to do anything outside of the session?
To achieve your learning goals, we will encourage you to do weekly homework. This will help you practice and enhance your progression.
About the tutor
Your tutor will be Amanda Jury. Amanda started working for Learn Devon in 2001 and teaches Functional Skills and GCSE maths. Before joining Learn Devon, Amanda has worked in residential care and accounting. When Amanda isn’t teaching maths, she breeds chickens and keeps turkeys, quails, rheas and rare breed sheep. When not tending to the animals, Amanda enjoys walking, swimming, kitting and sewing. She also has grandchildren to keep her on her toes! Amanda enjoys teaching at Learn Devon and prides herself on her ability to not only teach maths to anybody, but to be able to make it understandable and fun, so that learners enjoy attending maths classes.
