Everyday Maths

Passmore Edwards Centre, Newton Abbot

Who is this course for?

You can only enrol on this course through a friendly chat and skills check with an experienced Learn Devon Learning Support Co-ordinator.

This course is aimed at learners who have not done maths in a classroom for a while and are now keen to start developing the maths skills that they have.

The aim of the course is to create a supportive environment for learners with a focus on each learner getting the individual support they need to start to develop their maths. This will be done through looking at each learners’ current skills and knowledge and then develop a personal plan aimed at developing the areas that they would like and need in their day to day life.

Course content

You will start by doing some quick and easy assessments, which will show your strengths and areas for improvement. This will then enable the tutor to sit down with you and develop a plan for you to follow over the coming weeks aimed at developing the areas that were highlighted as needing improvement.

You will then go on to follow your plan with support from the tutor with the aim of developing your skills and knowledge in the areas that have been highlighted. While following the plan the tutor will be assessing your progress and once you have shown that you understand the topic you will move onto the next one on your plan.

Support and feedback

During the course your tutor will explain what you need to do, feedback on your progress and help you with anything that you find difficult.

Additional costs and requirements

There are no entry requirements for the course, however you will need to complete an initial assessment to ensure that you are placed in a class that matches your current ability level.

Will I have to do anything outside of the session?

There are no expectations that you will do any work in your own time. However, if this is something that you would like to do then please let the tutor know and they will be able to give you work to take home or show you websites with activities you can complete online.

About the tutor

I have worked at Learn Devon for over 12 years and have worked with many different groups of learners on a wide variety of courses ranging from learners with additional needs through to employability course and maths.

I really enjoy working for Learn Devon, as it has given me the chance to work with so many different people from different backgrounds and with wide ranging experiences and views and this is something that makes the job unique and enjoyable.

I have taught maths courses for learners across a variety of levels from pre-entry all the way up to level 2. I have also taught different maths qualifications and have developed a strong understanding of how to support learners to ensure they are developing their maths skills in a way that suits them and enables them to gain the skills they need.
