Prep for GCSE maths

Kennaway Centre, Exmouth

Who is this course for?

You can only enrol on this course once you have had an initial assessment with an experienced Learn Devon Tutor. This course is aimed at adults who wish to join a GCSE maths course in September 2018, but have not recently studied maths and wish to brush up on their basic numeracy skills.

It will also introduce some GCSE-specific topics, and prepare learners with the study skills required for the intensive one-year GCSE maths course.

This course is for learners wishing to get ready and upskill for next GCSE starts in Sept 2018. Learners should have everyday maths skills such as dealing with money, time, addition, subtraction, multiplication and division of whole numbers. Learners who have gained a D or an E at GCSE Maths and wishing to retake GCSE Maths may also find this a suitable course.

Course content

You will work in small groups and we will concentrate on key number skills, e.g. long multiplication and division without a calculator, percentages, fractions and ratio.

Support and feedback

You will be encouraged to be responsible for your own learning and record your targets and achievements.

Additional costs and requirements

You will need basic equipment, black pen, pencil & 30cm ruler, protractor and compasses.

Will I have to do anything outside of the session?

There will be weekly homework for completion over the summer break. This will test your commitment to studying for a much longer course, so it’s essential that you complete it in a timely manner.

About the tutor

Ellie Crawford has taught in adult and further education since 1997, and has worked for Learn Devon since 2009.

Previously she has taught at the St Loye’s Foundation in Exeter and for Trade Union Education at the College of North East London. During her teaching career she has taught IT, Literacy, study skills and trade union courses, but now works as a Maths teacher which is her favourite subject to teach.

Ellie has worked with learners aged 6 months to 86 years, with a wide variety of backgrounds and abilities. She has taught in the community and in the workplace, and has even taught on a double-decker bus.

Ellie is passionate about ensuring that her classes are safe, happy places where learners can thrive. She has patience and good humour and wants you to enjoy your learning.

“If you don’t ‘get it’ straight away it’s not your fault. It’s my job to take the time to encourage you to learn in imaginative and engaging ways until you have your own ‘light-bulb moments’. The only ‘stupid’ question is the one you don’t ask: in my classes you can ask as many questions (as many times) as you like.”

Ellie has a Certificate in Education from the University of Plymouth.
