Spanish for beginners: part 2

Who is this course for?

Want to learn the basics of a language? It’s difficult on your own and much more fun with a supportive tutor and a group where you can practice with each other and share the joys and frustrations. This is suitable for complete beginners and also for those with who have completed part 1.

Course content

You will learn and practise simple useful language such as:

Greet people and introduce yourself and others

Order a drink or a snack

Shop and find your way around

Numbers, the alphabet, days of the week and dates

Read information such as simple signs, lists and menus.

Write short notes

Some of the language and culture of the country or countries concerned

You will:

Work individually, in pairs and in small groups, as well as with the tutor and the whole class.

Take part in a wide range of activities; designed to help understand and use the language effectively.

Use a range of interesting resources including video clips, listening material and the internet

Support and feedback

At the start of the course your tutor will advise you of any course book that might be required. Please don’t purchase anything before the course.

You’ll need a pen, paper and a ring-binder for storing notes, hand-outs and homework

Will I have to do anything outside of the session?

Yes, effective language learning requires regular practise and reinforcement. You’ll be provided with short homework tasks to help consolidate and extend the work done in the weekly session.

You will also be encouraged to make use of other resources such as internet websites for self-study activities.

About the tutor

Judy Totterdell is currently a French and Spanish tutor for Learn Devon. She also teaches the Spanish recreational course at Petroc. She has taught Modern Languages including German to adults in North Devon for nine years. Previous to this she taught German and French at Pilton Community College in Barnstaple.

She has a BA in Modern European Studies (French German Economics) and a PGCE in Modern Languages. She taught German and French in Tooting, London and taught Spanish and French in Fishguard, Pembrokeshire.

Prior to teaching, Judy travelled and worked extensively abroad, including four years spent working in the travel industry in ski resorts and in Spain.
