Who is this course for?

This course may suit you if you have an interest in art history and cultural studies. These are short interactive online live courses aimed at building your understanding and knowledge of the arts, art history and cultural studies. They include practical elements and an opportunity to have live discussions with your tutor and others on the course. This course is suitable for anyone, this is a course for all abilities

Course content

You will be working with your tutor in a virtual learning environment using an online video platform called Zoom. You will be accompanied in your virtual class, with other learners. Your tutor will give practical demonstrations, have discussions, set tasks, give feedback and will support you throughout the course. You will be exploring some of the major art movements from 1900 to the present day, identifying key artists and artworks. You will be encouraged to develop your skills in looking at, analysing and critiquing artworks, and do self-directed research and analysis tasks looking at the recognition of artists, the cultural context of and responses to their work and the art movements they were part of. There will be the opportunity to explore your own ideas and follow set tasks

Support and feedback

Your tutor will support you throughout the course through online face to face discussions. You will work with your tutor on your personal goals within the structure of the course, and be encouraged to undertake pieces of self-directed research and critique of artworks.

Additional costs and requirements

You will need a laptop / PC / phone / tablet with a camera and microphone/headphones and a good internet connection. You will need a pen, pencil, paper or notebook. Some knowledge of using a computer for online research would be useful.

Will I have to do anything outside of the session?

Your tutor will suggest ideas on what to practice in your own time and will signpost you to other opportunities to support your learning.

About the tutor

Franca Westaway has been teaching art and design since she came to the South West in the 1990s. Franca is passionate about helping others to gain creative skills and confidence, whatever their area of interest. She has a wide range of experience both in schools and with people of all ages within the community and is particularly keen on 3D and practical techniques across many materials and disciplines, as well as the use of art for personal development and expression and as a therapeutic tool.
