Using ICT - Word processing

Who is this course for?

This course is for anyone who would like to develop their skills in using a computer safely and effectively. This course will concentrate on word processing and successful completion will lead to the achievement of Unit 1 Displaying Information Using ICT. Learners may wish to continue with 2 further courses (Finding Information Online & Communicating by Email) to complete OCR Entry Level Award in Using ICT (Entry 3).

Course content

Learning how to start up and shut down a computer correctly, work safely and adjust a computer for individual needs. Developing skills in inputting, editing and formatting text and images to display information that is fit for purpose. Knowing how to open/close, save and print documents.

Support and feedback

Your tutor will give you support and feedback throughout the course. You will complete tasks, during the sessions, to show evidence of your skills.

Additional costs and requirements

If you have never used a computer before, please contact the centre before enrolling, so that we can give you the opportunity to learn these basic skills before the start of the course. It would also be helpful to know if you need any adjustments made (e.g. alternative mouse/keyboard or reading/spelling support).

Will I have to do anything outside of the session?

If you have access to a computer, it would be helpful if you could practise skills between sessions, but this is not compulsory.

About the tutor

Caroline Gale has worked for Learn Devon for over 20 years in a variety of roles. She has also been involved in research, industry, working as a film extra, running a rural business and in the voluntary sector.

She enjoys adapting her teaching to accommodate different learning styles/abilities and specialises in developing methods for those who may previously have been unable to achieve using conventional techniques.

She believes that people generally learn best when they are enjoying themselves and in a relaxed and supportive environment.
